Buckle Up! It’s Child Seat Safety Week

This week marks Child Seat Safety Week. This initiative is to serve as a reminder for parents and guardians to make sure children are buckled up safely while riding in a vehicle and to make sure that child car seats and booster seats are installed correctly.

According to the Safety Council of Palm Beach County, many parents still do not know how to install a car seat for their children, which, unfortunately, results in many injuries and even deaths from car accidents. Injuries and deaths can be easily prevented by correctly installing and securing a child’s car seat.

Buckle Up! Child Seat Safety WeekHere are some quick tips for parents to make sure their children are safe in their vehicles:

  • Use a rear-facing car seat for infants
  • Make sure children aren’t unbuckling too soon
  • Make sure the seat belt lies across the upper thighs
  • Make sure the seat belt is snug across the child’s shoulder and chest (but not too tight!)
  • Use a booster seat for children who have outgrown their car seat
  • Children under the age of 13 should ride in the back seat

Did you know that car seats and booster seats can reduce injuries up to 45 percent? Take the time to make sure your child’s car seat or booster seat is properly installed and fastened before putting the car into drive!

Keeping children safe in vehicles is incredibly important. This almost goes without saying. However, in today’s busy society, parents can sometimes forget about making sure their children are properly fastened in a vehicle during the morning rush to get to school and work.

For more information on child seat belt and car seat laws and safety tips, parents are urged to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
